Flip a coin to your… Delta Squad Leader? The Netflix Gears of War movies and animated series continue. How better to try to top the best streaming services list than by bringing one of the biggest video game franchises?
Yes, 15 years after the cash-grab for the rights to the first Gears of War (New Line briefly inked a deal (opens in new tab), but nothing came of it) It looks like the popular video game series is actually, finally, going to get an adaptation. And if it matches the games, it will revolve around commando Marcus Fenix, his son Jedi, and the gang of locusts they fight.
The Hollywood Reporter has given this news (opens in new tab), 16 years after the arrival of the first Gears of War game (November 7, 2006). It looks like plans start with a live-action movie. It’s too early to tell if this will be one of the best movies on Netflix, but we expect it to dominate Netflix’s top 10 list (if Sony’s Uncharted is even higher there…).
These projects will be Netflix’s latest move to adapt IP connected to video games. It follows Netflix’s The Cuphead Show! and Cyberpunk Edgerunners, its most recent game-to-show hits (its The Witcher series — which will lose Henry Cavill after The Witcher Season 3 — is technically based on the books, not the games).
An adult animated series will follow. Then, like The Witcher, if it’s all gravy, Netflix Gears of War content will continue for a while.
Netflix’s Gears of War: Release Date Predictions
Given the fact that there are no actors, filmmakers or producers attached to Netflix’s Gears of War yet, we wouldn’t expect it to arrive for at least 2 years. Netflix’s most recent action movie, Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead , took 2 years and 4.5 months to come out, if you start tracking it once Netflix acquired the distribution rights.
A live-action Gears of War movie may take even longer to produce, as the war between humans and locust hordes (reptilian hominids) on Serra’s world seems more visual-effects-heavy than Man vs. Zombies in Las Vegas.
Here’s the idea, but we’d expect a Netflix Gears of War movie for summer 2025, with a winter 2024/2025 release slightly possible.
Netflix’s Gears of War: Possible Plot
Serra, an Earth-like planet, is the site of a conflict between the human species that threatens to tear the planet apart. And that’s just before a horde of locusts pop-out from Serra’s underground depths.
Marcus Fennis, a commando working for the Coalition of Ordered Governments (COG), plays a role in both wars before the Locust Horde, starting with the quest to steal Hammer of Dawn technology. Developed by a rival human group, the Union of Independent Republics (UIR), the device enables orbital-to-surface laser strikes. It was created by Adam Fenix, Marcus’ father.
After humanity finds a truce, a horde of locusts attack, practically annihilating the COG forces. I won’t go into spoilers about how everything goes from there, but it’s probably the start of a bigger storyline for the series.
Marcus later has a son, James Dominic “JD” Fenix, who also joins the military. Through JD, we meet Kait Diaz, who has one of the other major storylines in Gears of War lore, discovering her own past and ties to the Locust Horde.
Netflix’s Gears of War Outlook
The Netflix movie Gears of War makes all the sense in the world. Netflix has already shown interest in big-budget action movies — The Gray Man 2 is already confirmed — and a sci-fi video game movie will be new to the big red streaming machine.
It almost feels like it’s the biggest risk, because it has a bigger budget. Netflix, having already proven itself with animated Cuphead, Witcher and cyberpunk shows, seems almost more suited to a Gears of War animated series. That’s why we were surprised to hear that it would come in second.
