Damage CTRL shocked the world at WWE Crown Jewel 2022 by reclaiming the Women’s Tag Team titles from Asuka and Alexa Bliss. The title change came as a shock as Asuka and Bliss defeated Dakota Kai and Iyo Sky just five days before the event on Monday Night RAW. The booking decision left fans baffled, questioning why the titles were exchanged in such hot potato fashion.
However, there could be a few possible reasons for the shocking title change, some more plausible than others. The answers will probably be given on RAW, but in the meantime, let’s explore the different possible reasons behind Sky and Kai’s victory.
#5: Changing the Women’s Tag Titles to WWE Crown Jewels was meant to set up a War Games match at Survivor Series
The loss of CTRL and the babyface trio of Asuka, Bianca Belair and Alexa Bliss is set for a War Games collision at Survivor Series. Their six-woman feud has continued since RAW after SummerSlam, resulting in some great singles and tag team action. A six-woman tag team match was also held at WWE Clash at the Castle, where Damage Ctrl was victorious.
If the creative team wanted to set up a grandstand finish to their feud at Survivor Series, Bianca Bellaire’s damage control victory against Bayley on the same night was a great way to balance the field. Thus, both sides can enter the finals with gold in their ranks.
It will be interesting to see where Nikki Cross features in that equation.
#4: Last-minute changes in the days leading up to WWE Crown Jewel 2022
Eagle-eyed fans noticed that Sasha Banks and Naomi were added back in the introductory reel that airs before every WWE show. This change, after an absence of introductions and other recent signs of a possible return, may explain why Damage CTRL won the title in Riyadh. It is possible that the duo signed a contract with the company for a return during the week.
This would have prompted the creative team to cancel plans for Asuka and Alexa Bliss. Instead, they may have decided to put the titles back on Kai and Skye to fight the title champions between Banks and Naomi upon their return. Although they haven’t appeared in the WWE Crown Jewels, they may soon.
#3: The big stage win at WWE Crown Jewel was Damage CTRL’s attempt to jumpstart momentum
CTRL’s momentum has been poor and cold since winning the Tag Team Championship. Due to the lack of tag teams in the women’s division and the group’s somewhat poor chemistry, initial fan interest in seeing them together has waned considerably.
However, vanishing momentum can always be regained with a larger moment. It’s possible that the creative team took the titles away from Kai and Sky on RAW and put them back on the huge stage of the WWE Crown Jewel. A big win over one of the best matches on the card could be the spark that helps the duo return the championships to their former glory.
#2 and #1: Possible Saudi Influence or Bray Wyatt Scheme
A portion of the online WWE fanbase theorized that Damage CTRL’s awkwardly-booked title win was due to influence from outside the company. Some fans were convinced that the Saudi partners involved in WWE Crown Jewel 2022 requested a title change to make the event more memorable. The creative team may have decided to make such a change with the Women’s Tag Team Championship as a way to satisfy such a request.
This is, of course, just a theory, but it’s not too far-fetched, especially since there are no other title changes on the cards. At least on a professional level it would explain why Kai and Sky lost their titles on RAW to regain the WWE Crown Jewel.
Another theory was that Bray Wyatt “sent” an undrafted Nikki Cross to attack his former partner, Alexa Bliss. Wyatt’s logo appeared during a backstage interview with Bliss before the match, and their shared history led to some speculation. Will the newly returned mystery soon be knocking on the door of ecstasy?
