TCU Horned Frogs Football is ahead in our 2021-22 Athletics Year Review Series. The event with the biggest spotlight took a step back in 2021, resulting in a once-unimaginable departure and a new look for the future. The 2021 TCU football season ended as the most notable in many years, but for unfortunate reasons. Horned Frogs entered the season with disappointing expectations, but with Blue Chips and returning Max Duggan at RB, WR, DB and DL, optimists could see the way to a bigger bounce-back year after the 2020 Covid season closes with Texas. Bowl. That … well people, nothing like that happened.

The season began with a cake walk on FCS Duquesne where, despite a one-sided score, no skill-player crossed 57 scrimmage yards and made little progress in performance since the offense. Game 2 quickly demonstrated all of TCU’s weaknesses: CJ Caesar fired for long TDs and Max Duggan threw pick-sixes and every frog fan’s pre-season concerns came to the fore. The defense made Cal QB Chase Garbers look like Baker Mayfield, and the offense came to its most conservative form with a 50-run effort. Bail was granted by TCU A controversial call to a game-tying two-point conversion attempt Zach Evans, Quentin Johnston and Max Duggan’s legs superhuman performance to survive with a 34-32 victory.

34 points will not be enough in the next game, as the Frogs let the Iron Skeleton stay in Dallas. With By Weeks out for a home race with a rival, it would have been reasonable to expect Gary Patterson to have developed some plan to reduce Sony Dykes ’offense, but the result would have been just the opposite. In one of the worst defensive performances of the Patterson era, Pony collected 350 rushing yards and QB Tanner Mordecai threw 4 TDs. After a week-long waste discussion in the East, SMU entered Carter and backed him up. In the post-game festivities, SMU players brought the flag to midfield and a “disagreement” ensued between the two teams. In that fight, TCU assistant Jerry Kill was hit and fell. Patterson blamed the SMU players for Kill’s mess and yet went down twice to take the struggle to the press. Video evidence to suggest Kill got stuck in the response of TCU players. It was an embarrassing game and then the embarrassing actions caused the snowball to slide down towards Patterson’s expulsion.

With the calendar changing in October and the start of the conference schedule, starting with the home match against Texas, the event that Patterson dominated during his tenure, was an opportunity to leave this nonsense behind. However, the porous run defense is the last thing on the opposing side looking at superstar Bijan Robinson; He fired the Frogs for 238 scrimmage yards and 2 TDs and managed to eliminate the final 4+ minutes of game time to sustain Longhorn’s victory.

The frogs then showed a glimpse of life by beating the Red Riders in Lubbock. Evans again excelled with 143 yards and 2 scores in just half the work, while Kendra ran for 185 yards and 3 TD for Miller, it was a breakout day. Trey Tomlinson starred on the defensive side, Eric Izukanma returned the interception for TD with just 23 yards. However, the defense still allowed another 100+ yards in Sarodoric Thompson and 344 yards ahead of Henry Columbi.

Next week’s Norman tour began with a 3-game losing streak that will eventually be the final three games with Gary Patterson as Horned Frog head coach. Although TCU was certainly not expected to go on the road and win # 4 against Oklahoma (TCU was a 13-point underdog), Horned Frogs held on tight until the Sunners ran away with a 21-point victory. With less than 3 minutes to play in the first half, TCU was just 3 points behind with the ball, but it turned into a 3-and-out, allowing OU to get a TD before halftime No. Max Duggan’s career day and Quentin Johnston’s national-scene breakout again weren’t enough to get TCU at a noticeable distance. Johnston climbed to second in the game: 7 receptions and 3 TDs for 185 yards; All three scoring plays were crazy highlights that compared Randy Moss to Kirk Herbstreet and Chris Fowler on the broadcast.

West Virginia got off to a good start against the home game, with an early kickoff with a Darius Davis house call, but once again the TCU defense allowed a 100+ yard rusher (Lady Brown went for 111 yards and 3 TDs) and Max Duggan threw. Two choices for failing to score in TCU 2Nd Half felt like losing the locker room right here because it’s going to be a forgetting season, which became even clearer in Manhattan next week against K-State. Guess, TCU Defense again dedicated an impressive RB performance, allowing Deuce Vaughan to rack up 158 scrimmage yards and 2 TDs. The offense was completely unjustified, despite Kendra Miller playing hard, scoring the only TD in the game with 15 seconds left and the game already lost.

After an awkward flight back to Fort Worth, TCU Athletic Director Jeremiah Donati and Vice-Chancellor Victor Boshini met with Gary Patterson on Halloween Sunday, resulting in a “mutual agreement” that the man who brought the event and the university to unimaginable heights would no longer lead it. Football program Regardless of his on-field performances over the past few seasons, off-field foot-in-mouth statements, and the number of orange mock turtlenecks now burning in his closet, Gary Patterson will always be a horned frog legend, deserving of it. Campus Statue. You either retire the hero or the coach to become a villain; Unfortunately, time passed on coach Patterson and forced the university to take this step to revive the program.

The first game in 20+ years without turning to Gary Patterson will be a blow to the Big 12 conference race and college football playoffs against the red-hot Baylor team. Interim coach Jerry Kill will have to rely on his backup QB, Oklahoma transfer Chandler Morris, who will lead the emotional team in front of emotional fans against the hating Bears. Morris presented one of the most impressive performances in TCU history, carving his name in TCU education forever by adding 461 passing yards with 2 TDS and 70 yards on the ground and one TD. Across the state line, he brought Juice; Fire under a squad that was inactive most of the season. The only memorable moment of the entire season was the game: Baylor trailed by two runs and missed the field goal attempt with just 2 minutes left in the game. The Bears had reached the TCU region, on the boundary of the field goal range for a potential game-winner. Baylor QB Gerry Bohanon then locked his TE to go six-yard out, where the 4-star WR transfer TCU LB Shadrach Banks from Texas A&M was also locked. Banks snagged interceptions to win as frogs. Fans thronged the field and frogs in the banks were backflipping.

The honeymoon with interim coach Kill and new protagonist QB Morris lasted only a short time, as next week’s stillwater trip resulted in a brutal 46-point defeat at the hands of # 11 OK State. The Cowboys put up a ridiculous state line against the Hopless TCU crowd D: 447 yards and 8 (eight!) TD. Only four more passes were completed than Punt (8) in TCU’s offense (12).

TCU then got a bounce-back game in the building with Patterson for the last time to send off the pre-game for his seniors and gave the final wave to the stadium he built. As our friends in Austin discovered, the home game against Kansas in 2021 was not always straightforward, and the Frogs certainly did not relieve it. Two TDs less than ten minutes ahead as a rule, TCU allowed Jayhawks 14 quick unanswered points. But TCU managed a systematic 4:40 drive that included five first downs and Griffin Kell won a 25-yard game and scored a field goal.

The season ended with the ISU saying goodbye to the decorated class of deceased players in style. Bryce Hall was a monster as the top RB of the 2022 NFL Draft with 281 scrimmage yards and a total of 4 TDs. To ensure that the team would not reach a single ball game, this was a perfect final match for the messy season.

2022 Outlook

We’ll start our in-depth preview of our 2022 football season later this summer, but it would be worthwhile to count the optimism for some improvements, perhaps the first time since the 2018 Cheez-It Bowl to participate in a bowl game. Much is unknown, “We have to see how it moves.” Bringing in head coach Sony Dykes and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and Tulsa defensive coordinator Joe Gillespie from SMU certainly presents a big change in philosophy. Although the Frogs lost valuable RB Zac Evans to a wet miss, the roster experienced some exits on the transfer portal, especially with certified superstars Trey Tomlinson and Quentin Johnston. Dykes made a name for himself as a transfer portal wizard at SMU, and he brought with him some feats, along with significant off-season growth in secondary, offensive line and offensive skill positions. There is a big open question, perhaps the most important question: who will commit the offense as an initial quarterback? Both Max Duggan and Chandler Morris have the ability and temperament to handle the work, and each has shown brilliance of talent and incompetence. The relative success generated by the QB decision may be irrelevant if the defense does not stop or prevent big games like the 2021 team. So it happens while marching to the unknown all season without Gary Patterson. You have to see how it turns out …
